Castel is a little known French-American hybrid variety, cold hardy to at least -20 F and very disease resistant. Peter Hemstad, U of M grape breeder wrote an article entitled "Castel 19637, an Obscure Variety that Deserves more Consideration", in Notes From the North, Fall 2006, Vol. 32 #4. MGGA. p. 16. Castel has large clusters with small berries, somewhat similar to Frontenac in appearance. This wine is dominated by a cherry-tobacco aroma, with hints of plum and raspberry.

Rory's Recommendation - We planted our first vines in the summer of 2007, so I still need some more time to form my oponion. Although, they all grew, and with good vigor some will produce fruit in 2008.
