Released in 2003, Frontenac Gris originated from a random single-bud mutation on a Frontenac vine at the UMN Horticulture Research Center. Culturally, it is identical to Frontenac, having high vigor and yields. Hardy to at least -38 F. Disease resistance is good, with moderate suseptability to powdery mildew and black rot, and near immunity to downy mildew. Small red-gray berries are born on medium sized, loose clusters. Berry splitting and botrytis have not been observed. Suitable for high quality table and dessert wines, possibly ice wine as well. Ripens mid season with aromas that include peach, apricot, citrus, and pineapple. Labrusca and herbaceous aromas have not been detected. Ripens mid to late season.

Rory's Recommendation - Like Frontenac, Frontenac Gris sets the standard for cold hardy white wine grapes. This F1 generation hybrid combines the best traits from both parents: disease resistance, growth habit and vigor, high sugar levels, large crop, cold hardiness, late bud break... Front Gris produces very few tendrils, which make training a breeze whether you decide on VSP, high cordon, or GDC (only recommended on very fertile sites) training systems. It makes a great wine, my personal favorite, and continues to be very reliable year to year. Front Gris is a great grape for anyone from novice to commercial growers.
